The Book of Fortresses was made in the early 16th century by Duarte de Armas, esquire of King Manuel I of Portugal. It depicts Portuguese fortresses located near the border with the (then) kingdom of Castile — and the Royal Palace in Sintra.

You can view the entire book (fully zoom-able) here

cryptovolans:

so I did my scientific illustration final on whale evolution. This painting’s 3 feet long!
I did my best to illustrate every species as accurately as possible to the best of my ability. The sizes are vaguely correct but if they were actually to scale, the smaller species would be even smaller and the larger species would be even larger (basilosaurus is slightly bigger than a blue whale… and pakicetus is the size of a medium sized dog)
YEAH evolution!

“If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.”
- Bruce Lee

Bruce is widely beloved now, but remember, that this was the man whom Hollywood considered incapable of carrying a “leading man” role, much to his frustration. The Kung Fu television series was stolen from him and recast with a white man as lead, and Bruce was forced to wear a mask and act as a servant in The Green Hornet. Lee was only able to do his own thing by producing movies in China. Even today, I don’t think Bruce would be given a chance in Hollywood as leading man, because I still don’t really see East Asian leading men on TV or at the theater.
